Kurdish Khanjar with Flamberge Blade

Code EA7

A khanjar from Kurdistan (Northern Iraq) during the Ottoman period.  Variously referred to as a kindjal or khanjal.

Wonderful gold damscene with Arabic script on both sides of the wootz steel blade. The blade is a flamberge type and has a diamond cross-section with visible medial ridge.

The hilt is carved from a single piece of buffalo horn in the style typical of the region and era. Hilt to tip length is about 18 inches total.  This weapon probably originated in the Ottoman dominated area of Kurdistan as indicated by the traditional style of hilt and the decorative onlay at the ricasso.
