A large rencong with a puntung type hilt from Northern Sumatra, c. 19th C. The puntung he hilt (hulu) on this rencong has elaborate carving and an ostentatious floral pommel that is conspicuously different from the spiral carved bone hilt. This floral design is found in numerous areas of Indonesia. It resembles a new fern, emerging from the forest floor.
