Embossing is the creating of a design on the surface of an object in relief, or the application or a raised ornament. It is very similar to repoussé in the manner of making the raised design from the "inside out". Leather sheaths, shields, or scabbards can be embossed. Another method uses a stamp or press from the outside to depress the leather (or other surface) using a die or mold. This second process can also use gold or silver leaf. In either case, detail is added to the raised design by carving or chiseling (chasing, repose).
