Filigree

Filigree (filagree) is delicate ornamental work using twisted fine wire and beads of silver, gold, or other metals. A pattern is soldered together from individual wires and beads, carefully bent, curled, twisted and sized according to the intended design. This may be done separately and then attached to a sword or scabbard (for example) or applied directly on the surface of the object.  It is an ancient technique that has become a special branch of jewellry in modern times.  Examples of filigree decoration on weapons can be found from ancient times to the present, and from virtually every region of the world.

Here are some examples of filigree decoration in my collection. Click on the picture to go to the item listing.
