The production of an outstanding blade was a secret held with great care by the master of the workshop. Although the quality of the raw iron plays a very important role, forging of the blade blank could considerably improve a sword.  The hardening process is especially crucial.  A mistake can render moot all previous work; with great care, a good blade can become great.
